Social Media VA: Skills, Tools and Jobs
Social media VAs keep a business's accounts active: planning, posting, replying and reporting. It's a common first lane for VAs who like content and people.
What the work is
Most small business owners know they should post more and never find the time. A social media VA takes over the routine: a content calendar, graphics or short videos, captions, scheduling, replying to comments and messages, and a simple monthly report.
Some roles lean creative (designing and editing), others lean community (answering messages, growing engagement), and some include running ads. Read the job post closely to see which kind it is.
Typical tasks
- Plan a monthly content calendar from the client's goals
- Create posts and short videos (Canva, CapCut)
- Write captions and hashtags in the brand's voice
- Schedule posts across platforms
- Reply to comments and DMs, and flag leads
- Track reach and engagement and send a monthly report
Tools you'll use:
How to learn it
Run an account for an invented business (or a friend's small shop) for a month.
Learn each platform's basics from its own business help center: formats, sizes, what counts as engagement.
Practice writing captions in three different brand voices.
Build a simple monthly report: what was posted, what did best, what to try next.
How to show you can do it
Clients hire proof, not promises. Two or three of these in your applications will set you apart:
- A one-month content calendar with finished posts
- A before/after of an account you helped (with permission)
- A sample monthly report
Put your best sample first and keep it short. A client deciding between twenty applicants will look at one thing for thirty seconds. Make it count.

Questions people ask
Do social media VAs need to run ads?
Not always. Many roles are organic only (posting and community). Ads roles usually say "Meta Ads" or "paid social" in the title. If you want to grow into them, learn the basics of Meta Ads Manager.
How many clients can a social media VA handle?
It depends on the hours each client needs. Many VAs work with one or two long-term clients, which keeps quality high and schedules simple.
