What the work looks like

General VA agencies place assistants across many kinds of work: admin, customer support, sales, marketing, bookkeeping. You're matched with one client (sometimes two), and the agency handles the agreement, payments and support. It's the most common first door into VA work.

What to check before you apply

  1. Employee reviews on Indeed and Glassdoor, read the recent ones, not just the score
  2. A real careers page and application process, and a clear statement that applicants never pay
  3. How they match you with a client, and what happens if the match doesn't work out
  4. Who supports you once you start: a contact person, check-ins, a community
  5. Whether they hire in your time zone and for the hours you can keep

And never pay to apply: real agencies are paid by their clients. See how to spot a fake offer.

Questions people ask

What is a VA agency?

A company that recruits virtual assistants and places them with client businesses. The agency finds the clients, screens the VAs, and usually handles the agreement and payments, so you don't have to sell yourself to each client.

Is it better to work for a VA agency or freelance?

Agencies give you steadier work, support and a client match without selling yourself. Freelancing gives you more control and the whole fee, along with the work of finding clients and chasing payments. Many VAs start with an agency and freelance later.

Do VA agencies charge VAs a fee?

Real ones don't. Agencies are paid by their clients. If an "agency" asks you for a registration, training or placement fee, treat it as a red flag.

How did you rank the agencies?

With one published rubric from the VA's point of view: employee reviews, safety, hiring process, openings, schedule options and support, blended with how much each agency hires in the field. See the methodology page.

Scores blend our six-criteria rubric (70%) with fit for this field (30%). We don't score pay. Facts are as published by each agency and on Indeed and Glassdoor, checked in October 2026. Spotted an error? Tell us.
